2007-2008 BOG Achievement Highlights

Key Strategic Themes: Membership, International Community, Professionalism and Advocacy.

I.          Mandatory Chapter Dues

The BOT passed mandatory chapter dues at its August 2008 meeting.  The chapter dues billing has been implemented.  To date the College has received approximately 30 calls from members with concerns about compulsory dues payment.  The dues billing cycle was initiated earlier in 2008 than it was in 2009 so it is too early to determine the effect this will have on overall retention.  The chapters are currently engaged in their 2009 planning process, with an eye to increasing member value at the chapter level.

II.         Chapter Executive Steering Committee

At the request of the BOG Steering Committee, the BOT approved forming a Chapter Executive Steering Committee (CESC) to facilitate and continuously improve interaction between the Chapters and the college to foster best practices to improve member value.  To date the CESC has met at each of the Board of Governors meetings to discuss project to improve interaction between the chapters and the College.  Quarterly Conference Calls were initiated third quarter to provide a forum for training new chapter executives and to initiate dialogue on chapter best practices.  The CESC has begun work on an ACC Chapter Best Practices document.

Committee members were nominated by the Chapter Presidents and presented to the BOG Steering committee for selection.  The Chair of the committee was selected by the committee members.  Members serve a two-year term.

2006-2007 BOG Achievement Highlights

  1. Quality

Web Based Quality Training Tools

The Michigan Chapter of ACC is working with the ACC to develop quality web based training tools, accessible on Cardiosource. Members will be able to test and improve their knowledge of quality systems and earn CME credit.  Participants will able to translate that knowledge into action through College and Chapter quality improvement projects.

Governor participation in MDI

The MDI meeting this year was attended by 10 Governors and Governors-Elect.  This structured interaction between the State ACC Governor and the local payer on a neutral field greatly enhances communication and collaboration toward mutually agreeable outcomes.

 D2B Participation by all Chapters

All 39 Chapters are participating in the D2B initiative.  Chapters working with ACC National have instituted structures for identifying and working with hospitals and encouraging participation.

  1. Increased Chapter Relevance/Member Value

       Communication

Improved Communications of BOG activities to the membership through existing communications tools including My ACC, Cardiology, and ACC.org. December’s Cardiology was dedicated to Chapters and BOG.

Chapter Recognition

Created a Chapter Recognition and Incentive Program that showcased the accomplishments of our 13 award winning Chapters. For their award, the Chapter Executives received $1,000 and each of the Governors are invited to attend the March BOT meeting.  The February Cardiology Chapters article highlighted these Chapters.

 CME/CEU for Chapters

BOG Leadership will be sending a letter to the reorganized Education Committees asking for their support and help to develop a plan to implement this effectively at the Chapter level, in a way that will benefit ACC National and the Chapters. A report will be developed and presented to the BOT in August for inclusion in the 2008 budget and planning process.

Chapter Survey Project

All Chapter leadership were electronically surveyed regarding their development and partnership with ACC.  Supplementing the survey, every Chapter President and Chapter Executive met on a conference call with George Rodgers and ACC Staff to get a better understanding of the issues of each Chapter and see what individual assistance would be most helpful. The final part of the survey process is currently in place. All ACC members in a Chapter state will be emailed a survey to get a sense of why they are members of the chapters, what they get from being a member, and how ACC can be more effective in reaching the grassroots.

CCA Involvement

Just as we work to encourage Chapters to include CCAs in their planning and activities, the BOG welcomed Brenda Garrett to the BOG and BOG Steering Committee as an ex-officio member.
