Election Process
Finding enthusiastic members in your Chapter to become future leaders and candidates for upcoming BOG elections is part of the responsibility of good governance. Chapters should also encourage their membership to vote for their national representative.
Because this election is to select a member of the ACC National Board of Governors, the election is conducted by ACC National headquarters. Should the state for which a Governor is being elected have a Chapter, the elected Governor automatically become the Chapter President in accordance to the Chapter bylaws.
Each state has a Governor Selection Committee which is comprised of the present Governor and the 2 past Governors still residing in that state. The present Governor serves as its Chair.
The Committee is responsible for choosing and confirming 2-3 nominees and asking these nominees provide ACC National with a brief bio and position statement. A place for Write-In candidates is also provided on every ballot.
Nominees should be provided with BOG information including dates of meeting, their role and responsibilities with ACC and in their State or Chapter.
Elections are held in the fall of each year for approximately one-third of the Board of Governors membership, 15 months prior to the term ending of the current Governor. All ACC members, with the exception of Fellows-in-Training, in the State (or Region) are eligible to vote. Elected officials serve as Governor-elect for one year prior to becoming Governor.
Elections are generally handled by a third party. In the event of a special election, ACC national staff will run a closed election in house.
All Fellows in the appropriate state or region will be mailed a paper ballot. This contains their Member ID number and their Ballot number, both necessary for voting. This is the last year paper ballots will be used. Moving forward elections will take place using electronic voting only. To update your email address and preferences, log on to CardioSource.org and update your member profile.
All voters with email addresses on file with ACC will also be sent an email in which the link for voting will be embedded. Reminder emails will be sent these members as well.
Should a member vote by both paper ballot and email ballot, the paper ballot takes precedence and will be the recorded vote.
Results will be provided to the state Governor Selection Committee Chair (present Governor) for their ratification.
Results will be approved by the Board of Trustees at their winter meeting.
The Governors-elect chosen will serve in this capacity from the following March for one year, at which time they automatically assume the role and responsibilities of Governor for three years.
Governors should immediately welcome their new Governor-elect and begin including them in all leadership activities to begin their training process.
Governors-elect are encouraged to attend the next ACC Leadership Forum in January to begin meeting ACC leadership, working on Chapter goals with the current Governor and Chapter Executive, and participate in a specific orientation program developed for their new roles. Governors-elect will be contacted by ACC staff regarding travel and reimbursement arrangements for this meeting.
